TOP 09 presented a resolution supporting the Georgian opposition
TOP 09 MEP Ondřej Kolář presented a resolution supporting the Georgian opposition at Tuesday's EPP Political Assembly meeting ahead of the important parliamentary elections at the end of October.
"The European Parliament now also wants to take a clear stance on what is happening in Georgia. On the one hand, the country is standing up for EU membership and trying to fulfil the conditions, while on the other hand, the opposition there is facing increasing pressure and repression.
So, together with TOP 09 and with Georgian colleagues from the opposition United National Movement, we put together a draft resolution, which I brought to a meeting of the EPP Political Assembly Group in the European Parliament this week. They liked it there, and it will be further refined and discussed with other groups.
We want the European Parliament, through this resolution, to call on the Georgian Government to ensure free elections, conditions for media freedom, and for the government there to stop intimidating the opposition, minorities, the NGO sector and somehow not copying laws from the Russians," says Kolář.
