Markéta Pekarová Adamová spoke at the Congress of the European People's Party (EPP)
Markéta Pekarová Adamová, Chair of TOP 09 and Chair of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, attended the two-day Congress of the European People's Party (EPP). During the discussions and bilateral meetings, she called for cooperation between the members of the European Union on defence issues and the preservation of democratic values.

The Congress of the European People's Party, the largest group in the European Parliament, took place in Valencia, Spain, on 29 and 30 April 2025. Markéta Pekarová Adamová, together with TOP 09 MEP Helena Langšádlová, held bilateral talks on security with Lithuanian, Hungarian and other delegations. She then discussed key issues of European foreign policy with the future German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
At a panel discussion on European defence, Markéta Pekarová Adamová spoke about the Czech Republic's commitment to invest 3% of GDP in defence by 2030. „Every government must follow this. It is the role of us politicians to explain to the people why a gradual increase up to 3% of GDP is inevitable," said Markéta Pekarová Adamová about the Czech government's defence priorities. “The security of the country is not only a prerequisite for further development, but also for preserving the way of life of citizens and democracy in general.”
The TOP 09 chairwoman called for further deepening of cooperation between the EU member states and appealed for their unity in defence policy. At the same time, she appreciated the ReArm Europe plan, which sets conditions for Member States to accelerate the increase of their defence spending. "Since Donald Trump's administration has embraced more protectionism, it is essential that we as a European Union move from words to action. The plan provides investment opportunities for Member States' defence industries, but beyond that we are sending a clear message about the unity of the European Union. We have all the necessary resources to counter the Russian threat," said Markéta Pekarová Adamová.
Part of the discussion was devoted to the initiative of the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Markéta Pekarová Adamová, in favour of Radio Free Europe, whose funding the new administration of Donald Trump has decided to end. The Chairwoman of the Chamber of Deputies, together with the President of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, Miloš Vystrčil (ODS), called for the preservation of stable and predictable funding in an open letter to Congress. "Radio Free Europe has played an important role not only in our history, but also in the history of the entire Central European region. To this day, it is a provider of reliable information in many countries, including Russia. Therefore, it is our unquestionable duty and self-interest to contribute to its continuation," Markéta Pekarová Adamová concluded her speech.
